Algona Volleyball Reachs Regional Semi-final

The Algona Girls Volleyball team advanced to Wednesday’s Regional semi-final with a 3 games to none victory over Clear Lake: 25-14, 25-15, and 25-15.

Natalie Hackbarth, Katelyn Seely and Rachel Nelson combined for 30 kills to lead the Bulldogs. Kirsten Lipps added a 15 of 15 night from the Service Lines with Laura TerHark going 13 of 14 from the stripe with 4 aces.

The Bulldogs will host Iowa Falls Alden Wednesday night. The Bulldogs came back from a 2 game to none deficit a couple weeks back to win in 5 games. Wednesday’s game from Algona high begins at 7:00pm with a 6:50 pre-game on Hometown Radio…

Bishop Garrigan’s Even Qualifies for State

The Bishop Garrigan Cross Country team ran at the Class 1A district meet in Fort Dodge last night. Sophomore Katrina Even ran to a 7th place finish to earn a trip to Saturday’s state meet. Even’s time of 16:05 was a personal best and adds to her sophomore record. Senior Carrie Courtney also notched a personal Best time of 16:49 for an 18th place finish. Algona Volleyball Co-Conference Champs

The Algona Girls Volleyball team will be Co-Conference Champs in the North Central Conference after defeating Webster City last night 3 games to none: 25-13, 25-6, and 26-24. Kirsten Lipps had a 22 of 22 night from the service line with 6 aces.

Algona finishes with a conference mark of 8-1 tied with co-conference champs Humboldt and Iowa-Falls Alden. Algona will open up their Class 3A playoffs Monday with a visit from Clear Lake. 7:00 is the start of the match, broadcast time is 6:50 here on KLGA Hometown Radio. The Game will also be online at myinfocentral.com with the AMU Webcast.

Algona Boys Cross Country Team District Champs; Girls 7th

A week after the Algona Cross Country team claimed their first conference Championship since 1979, the team ran to a District Championship Thursday night in Estherville. The team will make its first appearance in the state meet since 1993. With the top five runners scores, Algona was tied with Spirit Lake so it came down to the 6th runner giving the Bulldogs the edge. Ryan McMahon ran to a 2nd place finish with a time of 17:01 and Chad Rutledge was right behind at 17:03 in 3rd place. Other times for the Bulldogs:

Goodchild Earns D2football.com Honors

Senior quarterback Kole Goodchild received high recognition this week as he was named the D2Football.com National Co-Offensive Player of the Week following his record setting performance in a 46-41 victory over MSU Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Griffin Stadium. Goodchild completed 31-46 for 433 yards and five touchdowns in the high scoring affair. His touchdowns went for 11, 12, 18, 50 and 39 yards against the Dragons.

He set individual school records in completions, yards and touchdowns while helping the team set new records in first downs (32) and team passing yards (471). He also helped red-shirt freshman wide receiver Calvin Simon post a school record four receiving touchdowns and established new career-highs for Simon in catches (9) and yards (198) while helping senior Antwon Williams to career-highs with 10 receptions for 133 yards.

Goodchild and Simon shared NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors for their efforts. Goodchild shared National Offensive Player of the Week honors with Brad Roach of Catawba (N.C.) College who completed 37-64 for 486 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-49 comeback win over Carson-Newman.

Adding to the impressive performance was that Goodchild shared reps under center with backup Hayden Vavra due to an ankle injury that limited his work in practice leading up to the Golden Bears home game. This is the first time in Goodchild's career that he has received National Offensive Player of the Week honors and the first time that Concordia has had a National Player of the Week awarded by D2Football.com.

Golden Bear Volleyballl Advances

The Bishop Garrigan Volleyball team advanced to next weeks Class 2A District finals with a 3 games to 1 victory over Britt West Hancock last night: 21-25, 25-17, 25-13 and 31-29. In game number 3, the Bears trailed 10-5 in the match before taking 20 of the final 23 points in the game. They also clawed back trailing 24-21 in Game 4 to extend the game and eventually winning the game and the match.

Serving was the difference for the Bears. Bishop Garrigan had 6 service errors in the game one loss but only committed a total of 4 in the next three games. Kali Smith converted on 26 of 28 serves with 11 aces.

Christina Richter blasted 14 kills including a stretch of 4 consecutive points in game 3. Macy Fickbohm added 11 kills with Emily Behr chipping in with 9 kills.. Fickbohm also had a solid defensive night with 8 blocks.

The Golden Bears will take on Emmetsburg next Tuesday at Pocahontas high school. Emmetsburg topped Pocahontas last night 3 games to 1. The Golden Bears rolled over the E’Hawks earlier this year at the Emmetsburg tournament 2 games to none.

Algona Swim Splits at Perry Triangular

The Algona Girls Swim Team traveled to Perry last night for a double duel with Carroll and Perry. The Girls split the evening losing to Carroll 73-22 but beating Perry 66-25. Overall the girls had a good night according to coach Jim Fisher. They swam well against Carroll and dominated Perry. Against Perry, the Bulldogs double pointed in every event we had an entry in except one. Against Carroll Algona wanted to score at least 20 points, and they did says Fisher.

Top finishers on the night were Megan Hauswirth 1st in the 200 I.M.and 2nds to Katie Hedinger (100 Fly), Beth Hersom( 100 Free) and Megan Hauswirth ( 100 Back). Against Perry 1st went to the 200 Medley, 200 Free and 400 Free Relays. Individual 1st went to Paige Walker (200 Free),Hanna Degen (50 Free) with 2nd to Deb Weideman ( 100, 200 Free), Katie Hedinger ( 200 I.M. Becca Kent ( 50 Free), and Becca Kramer ( 100 Breast) and the 400 relay team. 3rd went to The 200 Medley Relay team, Jenni Weaver(100 Fly, Missy Zadow( 100 Breast) and Paige Walker (100 back).

The Bulldogs had some girls taking time off their times in Perry, especially Deb Weidemann who took of 2 seconds each time she swam. The Team finished up the season with 4 total wins on the season and a 3rd place finish at the Polar Bear Invitational. The team swims at Regionals in Fort Dodge on October 27th.

Bulldogs Win; Bears Fall - 10/11 Volleyball Results

The Algona Bulldog volleyball team improved to 7-1 in the NCC last night with a 3 games to 1 victory over Hampton Dumont. Your scores from the match: 25-18, 25-17. 23-25, and 25-17.

Leading the Bulldogs were Natalie Hackbarth with 11 kills and Rachel Nelson with 10 kills. Algona hosts its second invite of the year Saturday.

Algona still has a shot for a share of the NCC crown. Humboldt takes on Iowa Falls-Alden next Tuesday. The Bulldogs are tied with the Cadets with one conference loss and Humboldt is currelent undeafeted so the Wildcats will need to lose Tuesday. Algona does have one remaining conference match Thursday night with Webster City.

Bishop Garrigan ended their regular season on a sour note falling to Clear Lake 3 games to 1: 19-25, 20-25, 25-12, and 28-30. Christina Richter had 20 kills for the Bears with Emily Behr and Meredith Meyers combing for a 28 of 30 night serving with 7 aces.

As a team the Golden Bears were solid from the serving stripe connecting on 84 of 92 serves. The slated 13 aces. Macy Fickbohm lead the Golden Bears in blocks with 6.

Bishop Garrigan will open up their playoffs Tuesday on the road in Britt. We will have that game for you here on KLGA Hometown radio.

NSK went 3-0 last night at the Forest City Quadrangular. NSK knocked off Forest City 2 games to 1, before sweeping St. Ansgar and Lake Mills. The Eagles will take their 32-4 record to Winterset tomorrow for a tournament.

Algona Boys First Cross Country Conference Championship since 1979

The North Central Conference Cross Country meet was ran last night in Fort Dodge and for the first time since 1979, the Algona Bulldogs are conference champions. All seven that ran for Algona finished in the top 20 even though the top 5 runners on the team count toward the team score.

Ryan McMahon picked up another 1st place finish with a time of 16:26 and Chad Rutledge notched 2nd place finishing 3 seconds behind his teammate. Both McMahon and Rutledge received All-Conference honors.

Bishop Garrigan's Katrina Even Earns Cross Country All-Conference Honors

The Bishop Garrigan Girls cross-country team took home 7th place at the NCC meet last night. Katrina Even picked up 5th place with a time of 16:39 earning all-NCC honors. Carrie Courtney notched a 14th place finish in a time of 17:16. Shanna Miller and Taylor Brandenburg each had season bests finishing with times 18:12 and 19:22 respectively. Miller finished 30th and Brandenburg finished 51st. Also running for the Golden Bears was Krissy Kohlhaas 56th place with a time of 20:00 and Anna Kollasch 61st place with a time of 25:52

Ben Hellman was the top runner for the Golden Bears Boys team that took 9th of the 10 teams at the conference meet. Hellman finished in 37th place finish with a time of 19:07. Chris Kellner and Chris Schmidt ran season best runs. Kellner finishing 44th in a time of 19:48 and Schmidt finished 56th with a time of 20:18.

Bulldog Swimmers Split Double-Duel

The Algona Girls swim team traveled to Spencer on Monday for a double duel with Spence and Storm Lake. They split losing to Spencer 78-16 and beat Storm Lake 51-43. It was a good night for the girls said Coach Fisher.

Against Spencer, Megan Hauswirth took 1st overall in the 500 free. The 400 Free relay team of Hanna Degen, Jenni Weaver, Megan Hauswirth and Beth Hersom took 2nd overall. There were several races the Bulldogs were in a tight race for 2nd and came up just short.

Against Storm Lake, first place finishers were Katie Hedinger in the 100 fly and 200 I.M., Megan Hauswirth in the 100 back, Beth Hersom in the 100 free the 200 med relay and 400 free relay teams. 2nd places went to Paige Walker in the 200 free, Becca Kramer in the 200 I.M., Hanna Degen in the 50 free and the 200 free relay team of Degen, Kent, Weaver and Hersom. Deb Weideman and Missy Zadow both had personal best Monday in their races. This victory gives the girls a school record for wins in a season.

Next up the girls travel to Perry on Monday, October 15th to swim against Perry and Carroll.

Bishop Garrigan 4th at CYO Volleyball

On Sunday, the Bishop Garrigan Volleyball team competed in the CYO and came away with a 4th place finish.

In Pool play, the Golden Bears knocked off Storm Lake St. Mary’s in 3 games and Spalding Catholic in 2-straight games but fell to Sioux City Heelan in 2-straight games.

The 2-1 pool play record advanced the Golden Bears to the Championship Bracket where they fell to Carroll-Kemper and Lemars Gehlen in straight games for the 4th place finish.

Christina Richter made the all-CYO team with 29 kills on the day. Macy Fickbohm added 28 kills and 13 blocks for the Bears. Meredith Meyers had 20 kills with 5 aces. Cassie Vautier was 46 of 47 on serves with 9 aces. Jesie Rosenmeyer served up 78 assists on the day.

WCLT hosted a triangular last night. The Tigers lost to Graettinger Terrell in 5 games: 19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-11, & 11-15. They then knocked off Armstrong-Ringstead in 4 games: 28-26, 20-25, 25-16, & 25-22. Stacey Schutjer had 38 kills and 16 blocks on the night. Alyssa Schwartz added 11 blocks in the two games

Algona Still Knocking at Humboldt's Door

The Algona Volleyball team continued its hot streak sweeping St. Ed’s last night in 3 games 25-16, 25-23, and 25-11. The Bulldogs received another all-around team effort with many players stepping up in their roles and doing what they needed to notch the win.

Golden Bears Knock Off Hampton-Dumont in 4

The Bishop Garrigan Volleyball team got back on the winning track with a four game victory over Hampton-Dumont last night: 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, and 25-18.

The service game got back on track for the Bears as they went 89-95 from the line as a team with 9 aces.

The Golden Bears move to 4-4 in conference and 10-13 overall as they get set for the CYO on Sunday. They will wrap up conference action Thursday night when Clear Lake visits. We will have the broadcast Thursday night on hometown radio KLGA FM 92.7 starting at 7:20.

Bishop Garrigan-Northwood Kensett Game Previewed on the Radio Iowa Scouting Report

Another big game for the #2 Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear Football team this week against #9 Northwood-Kensett. I will have a preview on the Radio Iowa Scouting Report Friday night. Both teams are 5-0 overall and unbeaten in Class A district 2.

The Scouting Report starts at 6:45 Friday night on KLGA and features the top high school contests from around the state along with preview of the state college football games for the weekend. The Scouting Report is part of KLGA's Friday Night Football Blitz witch begins at 6:30 with the Farmer State Bank Area Kickoff Show.

The North Central Conference Volleyball schedule continues to wind down tonight. Algona is on the road at St. Ed’s in a match you can hear right here on Hometown Radio. West Bend-Mallard moved to 8-1 in the Cornbelt by sweeping Harris Lake Park Tuesday night 25-13, 25-23, and 25-12. Amanda Frieden had 8 kills and 5 blocks for the Wolverines. Also helping West Bend-Mallard were Kayla Hartman had 4 aces from the service line, Amanda Knobloch had 7 kills and Megan Fuerstenau added 24 assists.

Also last night in Volleyball action, TRV fell to Manson NW Webster in 3 games: 12-25, 12-25, and 18-25. That puts the Thunder at 1-8 in conference and 3-18 overall.

The North Iowa Girls placed 3rd in the Class B race of the Eagle Grove invite. The Boys took 9th and got a 3rd place finish from Nolan Hovland.

Algona Swim Team Puts Forth Another Strong Showing

The Algona swimmers traveled to Boone Tuesday for a 4-way meet. Your standings:

Algona Sweeps Bishop Garrigan in Volleyball

The Algona Bulldog Volleyball team improved to 5-1 in North Central Conference play by knocking off Bishop Garrigan last night 3 games to none: 25-8, 25-8, and 25-14. Britany Thilges was 16 of 16 serving with 2 aces for the Bulldogs while teammate Rachel Nelson had 8 kills and three Blocks. Natalie Hackbarth was 12 for 12 from the service line. Algona is now 21-6 overall.

The Golden Bears had a hard time getting a rhythm going as they fell 3-4 in NCC play and 9-13 overall on the season. After the service game was improving over the past few weeks, the Golden Bears struggled committing numerous service errors. Hopefully this was just a hiccup for a Golden Bear team that was getting stronger each week of the season.

Bishop Garrigan gets a visit from Hampton-Dumont on Thursday for the next match. Algona travels to St. Ed’s Thursday for a match that you can here on Hometown radio with a 7:20 broadcast time. Our final regular season broadcast of volleyball for 2007 will be Thursday October 11th when Bishop Garrigan hosts Clear Lake for Parents Night.

A Pair of Golden Bear Girls Medal in Eagle Grove

Katrina Even finished 6th and Carrie Courtney finished 29th as the Bishop Garrigan Girls Cross Country Team took 8th place of 15 teams in the Class B race of Eagle Grove invite Tuesday night. Even notched a time of 17:11 and Courtney ran the race in 18:37. As a sophomore, Even continues to impress by finishing ahead of state-ranked runners in almost every meet. Rounding out a solid team performance for the Golden Bears were:

Algona Girls Cross Country 4th in Eagle Grove

Still running without Senior Emily Eimers, the Bulldgos notched another strong finish with taking 4th place in the Class A race of the Eagle Grove invite. Leading the way for the Bulldogs were Annie Klepper and Katie Connick. Klepper finished 14th with a time of 18:20 while Connick took home 16th in 18:27. Freshman Alanna Lauck put forth a personal best time of 18:57 and placed 26th. Algona other finishers were:

Algona Boys Cross Country 2nd in Eagle Grove

Freshman Ryan McMahon and Sophomore Chad Rutledge once again took 1st and 2nd place as Algona ran to a 2nd place finish in the Class A race at the Eagle Grove invite Tuesday night. McMahon has yet to lose a race finishing 1st for the 6th time in 6 races this season. His time Tuesday was 16:38. Rutledge's time of 16:45 was good enough for 2nd place and 13 seconds better than the 3rd place finisher.

Six of the seven Bulldog runners came in the top 25 finishing the race under 19 minutes. Those results:
